Starting with a Clodbuster opens up a ton of aftermarket hop-ups after you've driven it for a while. In completely stock form, it's kind of like an old-school monster. You may grow tired of it stock, and you can spend a ton of money with aftermarket parts.
The HPI Wheely King 4x4 is smaller than the Clod, but will get you up and running right away. The Clod kit is $200 (requires radio and batteries still), where the Wheely King is $210 and only requires you to charge up the included battery pack.
My vote, although somewhat biased, would still be the Clodbuster. Build it stock, drive it, and slowly purchase parts to make it more to your liking. You'll end up with something that's exactly what you want, and something that you built yourself.

I'm partial to the Traxxas Stampede. Yes, it's a "truggy", and it's only RWD, but it's also simple mechanically and has a ton of aftermarket available. Traxxas is also great with customer service and documentation. Oh, and it ain't expensive either.

Places like Tower Hobbies offer a huge selection of unpainted bodies that will fit the Clodbuster (or Stampede for that matter). Most bodies for the TMaxx also fit the Clodbuster.

I loved my Stampede, I didn't consider it a truggy though. That thing was a blast, and they're not expensive (now), they were 300$ when I first got mine. So much fun.

I'm not sure what your lookin for if it's electric, I agree with CPE MT the Clodbuster is a great choice. Although if you are goin nitro I recommend the TRAXXAS REVO, it's semi cheap easy to work on and a good amount of upgrades and hop-up parts. If your thinkin about a revo the 3.3 is the way to go over the 2.5.

if you want to spend more money, go with a nitro. I've got a kyosho mad force and I love it. its a 1/8 scale which is pretty large.
i would say go with a clod buster if you want something cheap that still looks like a real monster
